Dryer won’t tumble? That’s normal for older models. There are some obvious things that you can check before troubleshooting the other problems that are listed here are calling for dryer repair. First, you should check to make sure that the machine is plugged in and that the corresponding circuit breakers have not been tripped. Once you have checked these, you are going to want to take a look at the door switch.
The door switch should produce a clicking sound when the door is shut. If there is no click there are a couple of things to check. First, you will want to check the peg that activates the switch. If the peg is broken or bent, it will need to be fixed, if the peg is intact, then it is likely that the actual door switch will need to be fixed or it will need to be replaced. If the dryer turns on but doesn’t tumble, it is likely one of the following parts that’s the problem:
DRUM ROLLERS
There are two drum rollers located behind the dryer drum and in some models, there are an additional two in the front. If these rollers are worn out and not spinning freely, the motor may overload, and the dryer will no longer tumble. In order to troubleshoot this problem, you will have to need to remove the belt and hand turn the dryer drum. If the drum doesn’t spin, you will want to check for worn out rollers. If they are worn out, it is smart to replace all of them during the repair process.
ROLLER AXELS
While you are in there checking for worn out rollers, you will want to check the axels of those rollers as well. If the rollers wobble when they are spun, the axels are worn out or broken. You will need to replace the bad or broken ones.
DRUM GLIDES
The drum glides are made of plastic. These small pieces help support the drum and the drum glides on them as it tumbles. These pieces can wear out and this can cause the drum to bind up, which puts a strain on the motor. This strain will cause the dryer to turn off completely and, thus, not tumble. Inspect them for signs of wear or being broken and then determine which ones need to be replaced if they are worn out or broken.
DRUM BEARING
This bearing gives support to the back of the drum and a worn-out drum bearing can put stress on the motor. In order to check if the drum bearing is worn-out, you will need to take the belt off and turn the drum by hand. If it is difficult to turn, making a squealing noise, or a grinding noise, the bearing is bad and needs to be replaced.
DRIVE BELT
A problem with the drive belt is the most common problem that will cause the dryer to not tumble. In order to troubleshoot a problem with the drive belt, turn and adjust the drum with your hand. The belt should apply some resistance when you try to turn the drum. If it turns without any resistance, you can be sure that the belt is broken and needs to be replaced. You can also remove the lid to examine the belt to verify the problem.
